What is a Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a smart, eco-friendly solution for your heating and cooling needs. It works by using a small amount of energy to move hot or cold air from the outside to the inside, depending on what's needed. By using the natural warmth or coolness of the air, heat pumps are up to 50% more efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems. Experience energy savings and live comfortably with a heat pump installation today!

How Much Money Do Heat Pumps Save?

The amount of money you can save by switching to a heat pump from electric resistance heating depends on various factors, including your location, the efficiency of the heat pump, the cost of electricity, and the size and insulation of your home.

In general, heat pumps are more energy-efficient and cost-effective for heating than electric resistance heating.

How it Works

A heat pump uses technology similar to that found in a refrigerator or an air conditioner. It extracts heat from a source, such as the surrounding air. It then amplifies and transfers the heat to where it is needed. Because most of the heat is transferred rather than generated, heat pumps are far more efficient than conventional heating technologies such as gas boilers, furnaces, an or electric heaters and can be cheaper to run. The output of energy in the form of heat is normally several times greater than that required to power the heat pump, normally in the form of electricity. For example, the coefficient of performance (COP) for a typical household heat pump is around four, i.e. the energy output is four times greater than the electrical energy used to run it. This makes current models 3‐5 times more energy efficient than gas boilers. Heat pumps can be combined with other heating systems, commonly gas, in hybrid configurations.

The basic steps of how a heat pump works are as follows:

  1. The heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air or ground.

  2. The absorbed heat is transferred to the refrigerant through a heat exchanger.

  3. The refrigerant is compressed by a compressor, which increases its temperature.

  4. The hot refrigerant is then circulated to a condenser coil, where it releases heat.

  5. The released heat is used to warm the air inside the building in heating mode, or it is expelled outside in cooling mode.

This process allows the heat pump to provide both heating and cooling for a building, making it an efficient and environmentally friendly HVAC solution. Learn more about heat pumps here. 2
